Professor Gillian Triggs has a wealth of experience in the legal, human rights and social justice sector. She is well known for her advocacy work, especially regarding rights for women and refugees. Triggs was appointed by the UN Secretary General as Assistant Secretary General and Assistant High Commissioner Protection with UNHCR in 2019. Prior to this position she served as President of the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2012 to 2017, was Chair of Justice Connect, and Chair of the UN Independent Expert Panel on Abuse of Office and Harassment in UNAIDS.

This speech was made to launch a comprehensive report about women refugee and migrant experiences in Australia. In this speech, Nyuon reflects on her personal experience coming to Australia as a refugee and about growing up in Australia as someone who was not born in Australia. She speaks about a multicultural vision for Australia, one where racism is not tolerated, where women feel safe in the street and in their homes and where migrants are not subject to coercive control as a consequence of their visa status.
