The Honourable Pamela Tate AM FAAL KC

The Honourable Pamela Tate is a former judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria, having previously served as the Solicitor-General of Victoria. Tate grew up and studied in New Zealand, then attending Oxford University to undertake postgraduate study in Philosophy. On moving to Australia she taught Philosophy at Monash University, and while doing so she graduated with a first-class Honours degree in Law. She joined the Victorian Bar in 1991, and in 1999-2000 she was Convenor of the Women Barristers' Association of the Victorian Bar, before being appointed Senior Counsel in 2002. She was a Foundation Fellow and subsequent Director of the Australian Academy of Law, and the Winner of the Women Lawyers Achievement Awards (Victoria) in 2010. In November 2018 she was elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. In her research pursuits she specialises in human rights, the remedies available for human rights breaches and the role of the courts in human rights legislation. She was Patron of the Women Barristers Association from 2018-2021, and in 2023 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for 'significant service to the judiciary, to the law, and to legal education'.
